As part of the residency program in otolaryngology, each resident participates in a dedicated four month research block as part of the PGY-3 year. This part of the educational curriculum exposes residents to cutting edge techniques of basic science research and provides for an understanding of how new knowledge is acquired.
Residents have the opportunity to choose from the several projects currently being carried out by department faculty or to spend this time in any other department of the university. The department hosts an annual Research Day in March. In addition, the department will sponsor residents who travel to meetings to present original research. Many faculty members maintain interest in clinical research, and residents are encouraged to participate in these investigations throughout their residency.
