Scientist at School of Medicine receives $1.66 Million grant from NIH for otoprotection research.
Qing Yin Zheng has been awarded his fourth major NIH grant for research involving Usher Syndrome (USH) accounting for 50% of the deaf- blind population to study mechanisms to preserve hearing.
Qing Yin Zheng, MD, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Genetics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been awarded funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant Program (R01). With a clear translational goal, expertise of his research team and a very strong publication record, Dr. Zheng won this award for the next five years to carry out this study. This study has potential to uncover new therapeutic approaches to treat hearing loss in Usher syndrome.

August 2008 Devendrajit Kaur, graduate student in the Ph.D. program from the Department of Genetics, is doing her thesis research in the laboratory of Brian McDermott in our Department. Kaur passed her Ph.D. qualifying exam in August. Congratulations to Devendrajit!

Faculty member Brian McDermott received the “Basil O'Connor Starter Scholar Research Award” a grant from the March of Dimes Foundation. This is a two year, $150,000 grant. This grant will focus on "Elucidating the Molecular Basis of Heritable Deafness using a Functional Genomics Approach". Congratulations to Brian!
