Congratulations to Brian McDermott, Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, who has been awarded a R01 grant from the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders. This award will provide support for a period of 5 years to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of hearing and deafness.

Brian's Lab Group
Dr. McDermott has been a member of the faculty at Case Western Reserve University since October 2006, after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at The Rockefeller University. Research in the McDermott group is focused on a unique receptor cell that resides in the inner ear, the hair cell. This current grant award is focused on the mechanisms of development of the hair bundle, a mechanosensitive organelle that translates sound in to an electrical response that is decoded by the brain to permit hearing.
